God’s Perfect Gifts
I love Christmas and especially the giving of gifts. I love to spend time thinking about the person the gift is for, researching things they would enjoy, and I love the general sneakiness of a good Christmas present.
Humans love to give gifts because God loves to give gifts. Gift giving is part of our identity as image bearers. Just as we delight in finding the perfect gift for our loved ones, so God delights in choosing the gifts he gives to us.
God is the perfect gift giver. He knows the things that we want and gives good gifts even when they’re not the things on our list. Things on lists are great, because it’s exactly what you wanted, but the best gifts are the things you didn’t know you wanted.
Often we come to God with our “Christmas List”. The things that we want, the way we think our life should go. We circle things in the Amazon catalog and say, “Here you go God, Make my dreams come true."
But God looks at our lists, and sometimes he gives us those things, but more often than not, God gives better gifts than anything we could think up or write on a list.
I like to think that God in his perfect Sovereignty gleefully plans and orchestrates the gifts he gives to each of his children. And just like parents on Christmas morning, he delights in watching us receive them.
If fallen humans know how to give good gifts to their children, how much more will our Heavenly Father give good things to his children.
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17
